   Christopher Murray Grieve (11 August 1892 – 9 September 1978), known by his pen name Hugh MacDiarmid (/məkˈdɜːrmɪd/), was a Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure. Grieve wrote his earliest work, including Annals of the Five Senses, in English. However, he is best known for the work he published in "synthetic Scots", a literary version of the Scots language that he himself developed. From the early 1930s onwards MacDiarmid made greater use of English, sometimes a "synthetic English" that was supplemented by scientific and technical vocabularies.

Thomas Evan Nicholas (6 October 1879 – 19 April 1971),^[1] who used the bardic name "Niclas y Glais" (English: '"Nicholas of Glais"'), was a Welsh language poet, preacher, radical, and champion of the disadvantaged of society.^[1]

   Lewis Jones, writer, and political activist of the left, (December 28 1897 – January 27, 1939) was born in Clydach Vale in industrialised South Wales.^[1]
   Although his novels are more studied by academics now than by general readers, Jones occupies an honourable place in the history of left-wing politics in Britain, and in the ranks of socialist writers. Like many young activists of his generation he attended the Central Labour College in London from 1923–25, where he joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. During the 1926 General Strike he was imprisoned for three months in Swansea Prison for his trade union activities in the Nottinghamshire coalfield.

Jack Lindsay (20 October 1900 – 8 March 1990) was an Australian-born writer, who from 1926 lived in the United Kingdom, initially in Essex. He was born in Melbourne, but spent his formative years in Brisbane. He was the eldest son of Norman Lindsay and brother of author Philip Lindsay.
